HOW TO DISABLE FACEBOOK PUSH NOTIFICATIONS

facebook

As we all know, Facebook is one of the most popular apps currently available on smartphones today. According to an IDC research report, the average Facebook user checks Facebook about 14 times a day. Those 14 visits accounted for almost 33 minutes of Facebook browsing!

For most, it’s almost impossible to say “no” to the Facebook notification on your phone screen! It akin to asking our co-editor Ryan not to eat the donut while in a Krispy Kreme factory! Not only does visiting Facebook take up valuable time, but your data plan also takes a hit. So what if you disabled the push notifications from your phone? Will this help limit the amount of times you check Facebook each day? For those of you who think it will help, or are simply tired of getting alerts every time someone wants a life on Candy Crush, there is a way!

To disable Facebook push notifications simply follow these steps:

Android

1. Select  the Menu icon located next to the notification icon

2. Scroll down and select App Settings

3. Select Notifications

4. Select Mobile Push

5.Select/Deselect the items you no longer want to be notified about

iPhone

1. Select the “More” icon at the bottom right hand corner of the screen

2. Scroll down and select Settings

3. Select Notifications

4. Select Mobile Push

5. Select the items you no longer want to be notified about

There you have it! You will no longer be tempted by those pesky Facebook notifications. Now its up to you to keep your finger off that little blue Facebook icon! Heck! If you want, you can simply uninstall Facebook, but if you do you won’t be able to check out our supercalifragilisticexpialidociously bodacious Facebook Page

While we don’t anticipate you encountering any issues, if you do please let us know in the comment section below.

THE BEST FREE OPTION TO PROTECT YOUR COMPUTER FROM THREATS

Cyber-security has become an increasing concern in recent years. Between hacks that bring down big networks such as Xbox Live and the Playstation Network, to terrorism like security threats such as those that Sony faced late last year; one thing is certain — we have a big need for cybersecurity. While we often associate that word with large corporations, cyber-security is just as important on an individual level. Your PC is a vault of secrets that can enable someone access to your bank account and even worse, your identity.

To protect against the myriad of threats out there, you need to ensure you install an effective anti-virus and anti-malware software on your computer. If you’re wanting to pay a premium, Norton’sAvast, and MCafee Antivirus have strong reputations for providing some of the best virus and malware PC protection. However, you don’t need to pay these premiums to effectively protect your computer.  AVG is an effective and free alternative to some of the big name competitors out there. According to TopTenReviews:

AVG received the highest possible score from AV-Test for protection against new malware attacks. It also received near-perfect scores in usability, which determines the intuitiveness of the system.

Bottom line, AVG is an excellent alternative. To install AVG on your system, follow the steps below:

  1. Ensure that you don’t have another anti-virus already installed
    • Having multiple anti-virus programs installed can cause issues with performance and even leave your computer VULNERABLE!
  2. Download AVG from Downloads.com by clicking here
    • Note: We recommend visiting the link above. There are iterations of AVG on the net that ARE viruses. Be careful!
  3. Once downloaded, open the file.
    1. Note: It may take a few minutes to initialize the installation.
  4. Once initialized, select your language from the drop-down and click Next
  5. Click Accept to the End User Software License Agreement
  6. Select Basic Protection and click Next
  7. Select Standard Install and click Next
  8. Allow the installation to finish
  9. Once completed, restart your computer

You’re now officially protected! AVG should automatically update and give you notifications when threats are found, but it’s a good practice to routinely check the dashboard for alerts and ensure that the system’s virus definitions are fully up-to-date.

AUTOMATE YOUR ANDROID PHONE WITH TASKER

tasker

With today’s technology, our lives are becoming increasingly automated everyday. But for many of us, manually turning on WiFi or turning off bluetooth is something that we mindlessly do all of the time. Luckily, there is an app for that. It’s called Tasker. This app allows you to automate those pesky everyday phone tasks.

Before I get into what Tasker can do (because the list is practically endless), keep in mind that Tasker’s abilities are solely dependent on what you “program” your phone to do. Now, don’t flip out. You don’t need a programming background to take advantage of these great automations. Just a little desire, determination, and Googling. Lets get into it!

Below you will find our favorite automations. While some of these are easy to set up, others are a bit more complex. Also, to take full advantage of Tasker, I would highly suggest rooting your device, as some of these automations require root access.

Turn on WiFi when Connected to Specific Cell Towers

Tasker has the ability to know which cell towers you are connected to when you are at your house. When connected to those cell towers, you can have Tasker automatically turn on your WiFi, and when you leave the cell towers near your home, your WiFi will automatically turn off. This feature is not just limited to your home WiFi; you can set this up for any area you regularly use WiFi.

Turn off Lock Screen

Some of us take advantage of creating a pass code or some type of lock screen to keep our phones secure. However, is this really necessary while in the comfort of our homes? Tasker can enable you to bypass the lock screen when you connect to specific WiFi networks. So unless you have a sneaky toddler, this is a useful feature while at home.

Mute Phone During Meetings

If you keep your meeting schedule on your phone, Tasker can be utilized to automatically mute your phone during scheduled meeting times. With Tasker you’re 47% less likely to get fired as a result. (Statistic made up on the spot.)

Automatically Send Text Messages

There are a number of Tasks that can be created for sending Text Messages. If you are one that forgets birthdays, this task will be of great value to you. Tasker can send a Happy Birthday text message to anyone in your contact list. What’s even better is that you can set this up months in advance and even set it up to send the message on the same day every year. Just be sure not to mention your automated birthday wishes to your mother and/or wife.

Turn on Car Mode When Connected to Bluetooth

Smartphones and driving do not mix well. There are a number of apps out there that read out text and allow you to respond through voice commands, but it’s difficult to turn on while driving. Instead of having to manually open the app, every time you are connected to your car’s bluetooth, Tasker can automatically open the app for you.

Send Picture of Thief who Stole your Phone

This is an advanced task that can be created. Essentially, when your pass code is entered incorrectly a set number of times, Tasker will take a picture of the potential thief and send it to  your email along with the GPS coordinates of the phone. You better run thieves.

These are just a few of our favorite tasks that can be created with Tasker. Again, the sky is the limit with Tasker. If you can think it up, Tasker will most likely be able to automate it. There are numerous resources and ‘how-to’s’ available to help you get acquainted with Tasker. We would suggest starting with the Tasker Wiki, as they provide a great started point for tasks that you can create and step-by-step walk-throughs.

After you have played around with Tasker, let us know what you think. What are some of your favorite tasks? As always, if you have issues, be sure to let us know what they are in the comment section below.

APPLE RELEASES TOOL TO DISABLE IMESSAGE

iMessage

Although I do not know many people who have made the switch from Apple%20iPhone 6, Gold, 16 GB (Verizon)Apple to Android or windows smartphones (sorry forgot about you blackberry users). One question I often hear is, “why am I not receiving texts from other Apple%20iPhone 6, Gold, 16 GB (Verizon)iPhone users”? I can answer that in one word, iMessage! Or better known as iMessage Purgatory.

Most iPhone users have been unaware that they have been using iMessage. The service has been turned on by default since its initial release with IOS 5 back in 2011.  It’s not typically until making the switch, however, that it becomes blatantly obvious that you are no longer receiving texts from friends and family members who are currently using an Apple%20iPhone 6, Gold, 16 GB (Verizon)iPhone.

For years, iPhones users have had to go through the process of disabling their old device from their Apple accounts in order to receive texts from other iPhone users by calling into Apple or visiting their genius bar. This had to be done before deactivating the device to unassociate the current phone number. This became a big pain point for many customers and was highly vocalized earlier this year.

In response, Apple quietly released a new tool to make the switch to other smartphones a little bit easier. The process can be completed by following these simple steps.

If you have your iPhone and have not yet deactivate the phone:

iMessage

          Go to Settings

iMessage

          Select messages

iMessage

          Turn iMessage off

If you no longer have your iPhone:

  1. Go to the Deregister site here
  2.  Type in your phone number and confirmation code.
  3. Click Submit

Although this should have been avoided by proper planning in the first place, it is nice that Apple has created a simple tool (after many lawsuits) to allow past users to disable iMessage.

Do you think this is a good move by Apple%20iPhone 6, Gold, 16 GB (Verizon)Apple? Or are they far to late to the party? Tell us in the comment section below!

ADDING FINGERPRINTS TO SAMSUNG GALAXY S6

Galaxy S6

One of the best improvements Samsung made to its Samsung Galaxy S6 is its fingerprint scanner. Rather than swiping your finger on the screen, the scanner is now located on the home button. This new location makes scanning your fingerprint feel more natural, and seems to provide a better scan.

While setting up your own fingerprint is easy to do, I’ve had a few people ask if its possible to add more than one fingerprint. There are many situations where you need to use another finger to unlock your phone due to being in a awkward position or only having one free hand. The good news is Samsung does allow users to enter additional fingerprints, and here’s how!

1. Go to Settings.

Settings

2. Select Lock screen and security under the Personal section of the settings menu.

Secur

3. Select Fingerprints.

Finger

4. Verify your identity by scanning your fingerprint or typing in your backup pass-code.

5. Select Add fingerprint.

Add

6. Use the step by step instructions to scan in your new fingerprint.

There you have it, you have now successfully added a new fingerprint to your fingerprint scanner. Keep in mind, Samsung only allows you to have 4 saved fingerprints, so choose wisely.
